When you register a domain name with us, we set it up on our parked nameservers so a temporary page displays when visitors go to your website. After you determine which hosting provider to use, you can change your domain name's nameservers to remove the parked page and activate your domain name.

If you registered your domain name with another provider, you can still purchase a hosting account with us and use our nameservers.

To Set Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered With Us

If your domain name is registered with us, use the following instructions to update its nameservers depending how the domain name will be hosted or used.

NOTE: You can set nameservers for your domain name on the Product Dashboard, or in the Domain Manager. To set nameservers on the Dashboard, log in to your Account Manager, and select the Domains tab. Click the desired domain name, and then, from (Nameservers), select Set Nameservers.

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, select Domain Manager.
  3. Select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
  4. From (Nameservers), select Set Nameservers.
  5. Select one of the following:
    • I want to park my domains — This choice parks your domain name on our parked servers. When someone opens your domain name from a Web browser, our default parking page displays.
    • I want to forward my domains — Use this choice if you want to forward this domain name to another URL. See Forwarding or Masking Your Domain Name for more information on forwarding domain names.
    • I have a hosting account with these domains — Use this choice when your domain name is hosted with us.
    • I have specific nameservers for my domains — This choice indicates that you are hosting your domain name with another company (enter the two or more nameservers your hosting provider gave you) or you have custom nameservers to be used with this domain name.

TIP: For .com, .net, and .edu domain names, see Custom Nameserver Restriction for .com, .net, and .edu Domain Names for information on using custom nameservers with these domain names.

NOTE: You must enter at least two nameservers.

  6. (Optional) If the domain name's extension is .org (coolexample.org, for example), and the domain name is hosted by another hosting provider, you can enable DNSSEC for it. See About DNSSEC for information.
  7. Click OK.

NOTE: To set .ca nameservers for .ca domain names, you must also enter an IP address. For example, if you set your .ca domain's nameserver to ns1.coolexample.com, you must also set the IP address. You can enter up to nine IP addresses per nameserver. For more information, see Setting Nameservers for .ca Domain Names.

After updating your nameservers, allow from 4 to 8 hours for other networks to access information for .com and .net domains, and from 24 to 48 hours for other networks to access information for all other domain extensions.

To Select Nameservers for a Domain Registered Elsewhere and Hosted Here

If you purchased your domain name registration with another registrar but are hosting your domain with us, your domain name must use our nameservers. Check with your domain name registrar for specific instructions on how to set your nameservers.

NOTE: Aliased domain names use nameservers based on the date they were added to your hosting account.

After updating your nameservers, allow 4 to 8 hours for other networks to access information for .com and .net domain names, and from 24 to 48 hours for other networks to access information for all other domain extensions.

To Determine Nameservers Based on Hosting Date

If you have a hosting account with us, the default nameservers you need to use depend on the day you set up your hosting account. Use one of the following sets of nameservers:
