If you are hosting a website with Homestead®, you can forward a domain name registered with us to access the website when the domain name is typed into a browser bar. There are several ways to use your domain name with a Homestead website, but we suggest using the following domain name forwarding process:

  • Park the domain name that you want to host on your Homestead website.
  • Configure your Homestead account.
  • Forward the domain name to the "www" version of your domain name (for example, forward coolexample.com to http://www.coolexample.com).
  • Edit the "www" CNAME record for the domain name to point to websites.homestead.com.
  • (Optional) Create a CNAME record for your Homestead storefront

To Park Your Domain Name

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, select Domain Manager.
  3. Select the domain name you want to host on your Homestead account, and then from (Nameservers), select Set Nameservers.
  4. Select I want to park my domains.
  5. Click OK twice.

To Configure Your Homestead Account

Use Homestead support for information on setting up your Homestead account to work with your domain name. See Support for Homestead for information and assistance.

To Forward Your Domain Name

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
  3. Select the domain name you want to host on your Homestead website.
  4. Click Forward and select Forward Domain.
  5. Select http:// or https:// depending on your server settings.
  6. In the Forward to field, enter this domain name with the "www" prefix.
  7. To automatically update your nameservers to accommodate your forwarding changes, select Update my DNS setting to support this change.

NOTE: Activating this setting will update your domain name's nameservers and IP address. If you are currently hosting a website for this domain name, the website will no longer be accessible using this domain name once the changes are saved and propagated.

  8. Click Advanced Options.
  9. Select one of the following:
    • Forward Only — This option forwards your domain name to a different URL and leaves the new URL in the browser address bar. When using this option, you must also select one of the following Redirect types:
      • I am permanently forwarding my domain — Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "301 Moved Permanently" HTTP response. The HTTP 301 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has permanently moved.
      • I am only temporarily forwarding my domain — Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "302 Found" HTTP response. The HTTP 302 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has temporarily moved.
    • Forward with Masking — Prevents the forwarded domain URL from displaying in the browser's address bar, and lets you specify Meta Tags for search engine crawlers by completing the following fields:
      • Title — Displays at the top of the browser window and in search results.
      • Description — A short description of your website to display in search engine results.
      • Keywords — A list of comma-separated keywords that describes the content and purpose of your website.
  10. Click OK.

NOTE: Forwarded domains can take up to 24 hours to become active. If your domain is not forwarding, following the instructions in Updating Your Domain Name's IP Address for Forwarding may resolve your issue.
