Whonami-How to set up DNS with Your Parallels Plesk Panel 9 Server and Domain with Us?

There are three steps to setting up DNS for websites hosted on your dedicated or Virtual Private Server (VPS) using Plesk 9:

  1. Create a zone file for your domain name in Parallels Plesk Panel.
  2. Create and register two domain hosts.
  3. Assign your nameservers to your registered domain name.

Step 1 — Creating a Zone File for Your Domain Name in Parallels Plesk Panel

Parallels Plesk Panel automatically creates a zone file for any domain name you set up in Parallels Plesk Panel. If you have already set up a domain name in Parallels Plesk Panel, you can skip this step.

To Create a Zone File for Your Domain Name in Parallels Plesk Panel

  1. Log in to Parallels Plesk Panel as admin.
  2. In the Clients section, click the client you want to use.
  3. Click Add New Domain.
  4. Complete the on-screen fields, and then click OK.
  5. Select the type of hosting for the domain name, and click OK.
  6. Complete the hosting setup page and click OK.

NOTE: These changes to your dedicated server may take up to 24 hours to complete.

Step 2 — Creating and Registering Your Domain Hosts

Once you set up a domain name and create a zone file in Parallels Plesk Panel, you need to create and register two domain hosts for your domain name. If your domain name is registered with us, you can complete this step in your account with us. If your domain name is registered with another company, you will need to contact them for instructions regarding domain host registration.

See Change Nameservers for Your Domain Names for instructions on creating domain hosts and use the IP address for your server (you can find the IP address for your server in your dedicated or Virtual Private Server (VPS) manager or in Plesk).

The two domain hosts you create can be used for other domain names hosted on your Virtual Private Server (VPS). You do not need to create new domain hosts for each of your domain names.

After creating your domain hosts, you must register them on your server.

To Register Your Domain Hosts in Parallels Plesk Panel

  1. Log in to Parallels Plesk Panel as admin.
  2. In the Domains section, click Domains.
  3. Click the domain name you want to use.
  4. In the Web Site section, click DNS Settings.
  5. Click Add Record, complete the following fields, and then click OK:
    • Record type — Select A.
    • Enter domain name — Enter the subdomain you used for your domain host, eg., NS1.
    • Enter IP address — Enter your server’s IP address.
  6. Repeat the last step using the following information to create three more records:
    • Record type — Select A.
Enter domain name — Enter the subdomain you used for your domain host, eg., NS2.
Enter IP address — Enter your server’s IP address.
    • Record type — Select NS.
Enter domain name — Type www, or enter the subdomain for your website.
Enter IP address — Enter one of the subdomains you created for your domain host, along with your domain name, eg. NS1.coolexample.com., where coolexample.com is your domain name.
    • Record type — Select NS.
Enter domain name — Type www, or enter the subdomain for your website.
Enter IP address — Enter one of the subdomains you created for your domain host, along with your domain name, eg. NS2.coolexample.com., where coolexample.com is your domain name.

Step 3 — Register the namerservers

Now that you have created and registered two domain hosts, you need to set the nameservers for your domain name to point to your dedicated/Virtual Private Server (VPS). For more information, see Change Nameservers for Your Domain Names.

Step 4 — Setting your nameservers

Now that you have registered the customer nameservers you have created, you can point your domain to them. See Change Nameservers for Your Domain Names and select I have specific nameservers for my domains

These and any other DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to reflect live on the Internet.

There are 6 steps you need to do:

1- Backing Up and Saving Your Website’s Files

You’ll need a copy of your website’s files to work both as a backup and a copy of your site to upload to your new cheap webhosting account. If you still have the most recent version of your site’s files saved to your hard drive, you can skip this step and purchase a new hosting plan.

To Back Up and Save Your Site’s Files
Log in to your Account Manager.
Click Web Hosting.
Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
From the Tools section, click FTP File Manager.
Select all of your site’s files.
You can only archive up to 20MB of data, but you might create multiple archives.

Click the Archive icon in the action bar.
Complete the on-screen instructions, and then click OK:
Select Destination:
Enter the name of a new or existing destination folder or click Browse to navigate to an existing directory into which you want to archive the selected items.
Archive Name:
Enter a name for this archive file.
Archive Type:
Select the archive type.
Zip (.zip) – This is used for Windows or Linux hosting accounts.
Tar GZip (tar.gz) – This is used for Linux hosting accounts.
Password (optional):
This field is only available for Zip archive compression and offers the option of password protecting your compressed archive file.
Overwrite existing file:
Select this option to overwrite any archived files or directories with the same name as those your are archiving within the selected destination directory.
Select your ZIP backup file, click Download, and then save the file to your computer.

2- Purchasing New Hosting

3- Canceling Your Old Hosting

Because you can’t have two hosting plans using the same domain name, you need to cancel your old hosting account before you can set up your new one.

Once your hosting account is canceled, your site is inaccessible. Generally, you must wait an hour to set up your new hosting account, although it might take up to 24 hours.

To Cancel Your Old Hosting
Log in to your Account Manager.
Click Web Hosting.
Click on the name of the hosting account you want to cancel.
Click Cancel this account.
Click Cancel Account.
Setting Up Your New Hosting
Once you’ve canceled your old hosting account, you can set up your new hosting within 24 hours.

4-Setting up Your Hosting Account

Log in to your Account Manager.
Click Web Hosting.
Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
Complete the following fields, and then click Finish:
Enter domain — Enter the domain name you want to use.
FTP user name — Use the automatically generated user name, or click Change, and then enter the FTP user name you want to use.
Password & Confirm password — Enter the password you want to use to access your hosting account with FTP and to log in to the Hosting Control Panel directly.
(Optional) SSL credits — If you have SSL credits in the same account as the domain name you want to use, select the SSL credit you want to use with this hosting account.
The estimated wait time for your hosting account to become accessible displays. Once your hosting account is ready to use, we send you an email message containing all of your basic account-management information.

5-Uploading Your Site’s Back Up

After your new hosting plan is set up, upload the backup of your files. If you did not create a ZIP backup earlier, see FTP: How to upload files. Otherwise, follow these instructions.

Multiple file uploading requires Adobe Flash® Player 9. We also recommend using the latest version of your browser. Multiple file upload functionality is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later versions.

To Upload Your Site’s Back Up
Log in to your Account Manager.
Click Web Hosting.
Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
From the Tools section, click FTP File Manager.
Select html using the directory tree.
In the menu bar, click Upload.
Click Browse , and then select the ZIP backup file from your computer. If your ZIP backup file is larger than 8MB, see Upload files.
Click Upload.
Select your ZIP backup file, and then click the Unarchive icon in the action bar.
Select the following options:
Select Destination
To unarchive your site properly, ensure the destination field only contains a forward-slash (“/”).
Overwrite existing file
Select this option to overwrite any file with the same name.
Click OK.

6-Updating Your DNS

For your site to be accessible, your domain name’s DNS settings might need to be modified.

If your domain name and hosting are in the same account, updates happen automatically.
If your domain is registered elsewhere, see Change Nameservers for Your Domain Names to obtain your domain’s correct nameservers.
If your domain is registered with us, but in another account, see What is my website’s IP address? and then update your domain name’s A record using your IP address.

Next to Domains, click Manage.
Go to the Zone File Editor for the domain name you want to update.
In the A (Host) section, click the A record you want to edit.
From your A (Host) group, locate the “@” host, and then click Edit in the Actions column.
Complete the following:
Host Name
Do not modify this field. It should remain “@.”
