Why should I register more than one domain name?

If you’re thinking about registering more than one domain name, you’ve got the right idea. Registering and using multiple domains names is great for building your business, protecting your brand name, and creating a dynamic online identity.

When you register multiple domain names, you can:

  • Keep your competition from registering a similar domain name drawing customers to them instead of you
  • Promote the different products and services you offer
  • Drive more traffic to your website
  • Enjoy more opportunities to market to — and be listed in — search engines
  • Create distinct advertising strategies reaching different target markets
  • Provide customers more ways to find you when searching the Internet
  • Capture common misspellings of your domain name, instead of sending visitors to an error page
  • Protect your brand and online identity

Setting Nameservers for Your Domain Names

When you register a domain name with us, we set it up on our parked nameservers so a temporary page displays when visitors go to your website. After you determine which hosting provider to use, you can change your domain name’s nameservers to remove the parked page and activate your domain name.

If you registered your domain name with another provider, you can still purchase a hosting account with us, use our Off-site DNS services, or use our CashParking® or Quick Content services. If you do any of those, you must view your nameservers in your account with us, and then set the nameservers with your domain name registrar.

Setting Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered with Us

If your domain name is registered with us, use the following instructions to update its nameservers depending how you use or host the domain name.

To Set Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered with Us

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, select Domains/Domain Manager.
  3. Select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
  4. From  (Nameservers), select Set Nameservers.
  5. Select one of the following:
    • I want to park my domains — This option parks your domain name on our parked servers. When someone opens your domain name from a Web browser, our default parking page displays.
    • I want to forward my domains — Use this option if you want to forward this domain name to another URL. See Forwarding or Masking Your Domain Name for more information.
    • I have a hosting account with these domains — Use this option when your domain name is hosted with us.
    • I have specific nameservers for my domains — This option indicates that you are hosting your domain name with another company (enter the two or more nameservers your hosting provider gave you), or you have custom nameservers you want to use for this domain name.TIP: For .com, .net, and .edu domain names, see Custom Nameserver Restriction for .com, .net, and .edu Domain Names for information on using custom nameservers with these domain names. Likewise, certain country-code top-level domain names (ccTLDs) have specific requirements for their nameservers. See About ccTLDs (Country-Code Domain Names) to find the Help article with the nameserver requirements for your ccTLD.

NOTE: You must enter at least two nameservers. After you set third-party nameservers and the DNS propagates, you can no longer manage your domain name’s DNS in our system and must contact your third-party provider to do so.

  6. (Optional) If DNSSEC is available for the domain name’s extension and the domain name is hosted with another provider, you can click Manage DS Records to set up self-managed DNSSEC. See About Self-Managed DNSSECfor information.
  7. Click OK.

Setting Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered Elsewhere and Hosted with Us

If you registered your domain name with another registrar but are hosting it with us, it must use our nameservers. We send you an email that lists your nameservers when you set up your hosting account. You can also use the instructions below to view the nameservers your domain name uses. Then, ask your domain name registrar how to set the nameservers with them.

NOTE: If you cannot access the Hosting Control Center or have difficulty viewing your domain name’s nameservers, you can contact our support team for assistance.

To Set Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered Elsewhere and Hosted with Us

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. From the My Products section, click Web Hosting.
  3. Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
  4. From the Settings menu, select DNS Manager.
  5. Click change zone.
  6. Select the domain name you want to use, and then click OK.

Your domain’s nameservers display in the NS (Nameserver) section. You must provide these nameservers to your domain name’s current registrar.

Example of Standard DNS nameservers:
ns01.domaincontrol.com
ns02.domaincontrol.com

Example of Premium DNS nameservers:
pdns01.domaincontrol.com
pdns02.domaincontrol.com

Setting Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered Elsewhere and Using Off-site DNS

If you purchased your domain name registration with another registrar but are using our Off-site DNS, your domain name must use our nameservers. Use the Standard DNS or Premium DNS instructions below to find your nameservers, and then ask your domain name registrar how to set your nameservers with them.

To Set Nameservers for Standard DNS Accounts

If you are using our Off-site DNS and have Standard DNS (the basic version of our DNS Manager), ask your registrar to update your domain name’s nameservers to:

  • mns01.domaincontrol.com
  • mns02.domaincontrol.com

To Set Nameservers for Premium DNS Accounts

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the left sidebar, click My Account.
  3. In the Domain Related section, click Off-site DNS Management. The DNS Dashboard displays.
  4. For the domain name you want to work with, click Edit Zone. The Zone File Editor displays.
  5. Go to the NS (Nameserver) section to view your nameservers, which are in the following ranges:
    • [pdns01-pdns13].domaincontrol.com
    • [pdns02-pdns14].domaincontrol.com

NOTE: Nameservers use consecutive odd and even pairs, sopdns01.domaincontrol.com works with pdns02.domaincontrol.com, whereas pdns12.domaincontrol.com would not work withpdns13.domaincontrol.com.

  6. Set your nameservers with your domain name’s registrar.

Setting Nameservers for a Domain Name Registered Elsewhere and Using CashParking or Quick Content

If you purchased your domain name registration with another registrar but are using our CashParking or Quick Content services, your domain name must use our nameservers. Check with your domain name registrar for specific instructions on how to set your nameservers with them.

To Set Nameservers for CashParking

If you are using CashParking, you must tell your registrar to update your domain name’s nameservers to:

  • ns01.cashparking.com
  • ns02.cashparking.com

To Set Nameservers for Quick Content

If you are using Quick Content, you must tell your registrar to update your domain name’s nameservers to:

  • hpns01.domaincontrol.com
  • hpns02.domaincontrol.com

After updating your nameservers, allow 4 to 8 hours for other networks to access information for .com and .net domain names, and allow 24 to 48 hours for other networks to access information for all other domain extensions. If you have difficulty, contact our 24/7 technical support team for assistance.

Private Domain Registration

Private domain registration deal

Did you know that when you register a domain, your name, address, email address and phone number are immediately made available to anyone who wants to see them? That’s right. Your personal information is exposed 24 hours a day, everyday, to anyone, anywhere.

You have the power to change this. With a private (“unlisted”) registration through Domains By Proxy (our affiliate company), registering a domain name doesn’t mean sacrificing your privacy.

How It Works

  • – Your new or existing domain is registered in the name of Domains By Proxy — so their information is made public — not yours.
  • – You retain full benefits of domain registration. You can cancel, sell, renew, or transfer your domain; set-up name servers for your domain; and resolve disputes involving your domain.
  • – The patented registration and email handling systems let you manage and control all postal mail and email addressed to the domain you have registered, as well as the domain’s contact information.
  • – Your domain registration is safe and insured against loss.
  • – But don’t even think about using a private registration to transmit spam, violate the law, or engage in morally objectionable activities.

A Private “Unlisted” Registration protects you from:

  • – Domain-related spam
  • – Harassers, stalkers, and data miners
  • – “Moonlighting,” home- or side-business identity disclosure
  • – Privacy intrusions

Adding Private Registration to Your Domain Names Per our agreement with the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), we must add valid contact information to the Whois directory for each domain name you register. By purchasing private registration from our affiliate company, Domains By Proxy® (DBP), you can hide your personal contact information and display proxy information instead. Click here to see the difference.

Private registration is available for many domain name extensions. However, some registries do not allow privacy. If the registry does not allow privacy, the Privacy tab is not available in the domain name’s Upgrade section of the Domain Manager.

To Add Privacy to Your Domain Names

  1. 1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. 2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
  3. 3. Select the domain name(s) you want to add privacy to.
  4. 4. Click Upgrade.
  5. 5. From the Registration tab, select Privacy.
  6. 6. Click Add, and then select one of the following:
    • – Create a new account – If you do not have a DBP account, DBP creates a new one for you. Then, DBP sends you an email message with your user name, password, and a link to the DBP website. You should save the email message for your records.
    • – Use an existing account – If you already have a DBP account, enter your login information in the User Name and Password fields.
  7. 7. Click Checkout, and complete the checkout process.

It can take 24 to 48 hours for the DBP information to display in the Whois database.

For more information about using your DBP account, see What can I do in my Domains By Proxy account?

Domain Name Registrations and Transfers
Product Overview
Domain name registration is the process of reserving the rights to an Internet domain for a predetermined amount of time. Domains are generally registered one—10 years. A domain transfer moves the registration of a domain name from one registrar to another. The following domain extensions (i.e., top-level domains (TLDs)) are currently available
for registration and/or transfer:
.biz .com .info .jobs .mobi.name .net .org .tv.ws .am .at.be .cc
Country-Code TLDs
.cn/.com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn    .co.nz/.net.nz/.org.nz    .co.uk/.me.uk/.org.uk    .tw/.com.tw/.idv.tw/org.tw    .de .eu .fm .gs .jp .ms .nu .nw .tc .tk .us .vg
Customer Benefits
  • The first step in establishing a Web presence.
  • Large variety of available TLDs.
How it Works
The domain name registration process begins with a search for available names. Once a domain has been registered or transferred an intuitive interface allows the registrant to perform all domain-related maintenance functions.
Private Domain Registrations
Product Overview
Private registration allows a domain name registrant to keep his/her personal information out of the Whois database, thus shielding the registrant’s identity from the public eye. Private domain registrations are managed through Domains By Proxy®, which is also the entity whose contact information will appear in the Whois database for the privately-
registered domain. Your customer retains all rights to the domain registration; Domains By Proxy simply serves as the intermediary (or “proxy”) between the domain registrant and any outside correspondence.
Customer Benefits
  • Registrant’s identity not available to the public.
  • Registrant’s personal information cannot be captured and exploited.
  • Shields registrant from Whois database mining (i.e., the process of scouring and
  • collecting data for personal or commercial purposes).
  • Patent-pending email forwarding system filters domain-related spam.
How it Works
During the domain name registration process, the customers may choose to make the registration private. The Domains By Proxy Web site allows private-registration customers to modify account settings, track domain-related correspondence, etc.
DomainAlert® Pro
Product Overview
DomainAlert® Pro – Monitoring, Backordering and Investor’s Edge – is a family of products that helps users keep close watch over currently-registered domain names, providing timely and invaluable information on domain status, as well as securing the inside track on registering soon-to-expire domain registrations.
DomainAlert Monitoring alerts the user if and when a monitored domain becomes available and keeps him/her informed about changes to the domain’s
Whois information and registration period. DomainAlert Monitoring service can be applied to any domain name, regardless of its registrant and registrar.
DomainAlert Backordering allows the customer to “backorder” a domain, meaning that DomainAlert will attempt to register the domain on the user’s behalf as soon as its registration expires and the domain becomes available. DomainAlert Backordering includes DomainAlert Monitoring capabilities, as well.
DomainAlert Investor’s Edge helps the customer by maintaining a continually updated list of expiring domains from which the customer can select the one(s) he/she wishes to register upon expiration.
Customer Benefits
  • Best chance to register a desired, soon-to-be-expiring domain name.
  • Constantly monitors the expired-domain market.
  • Reports timely, accurate information.
  • Provides all the tools needed for speculation in the domain name market.
How it Works
Customers can choose between DomainAlert Monitoring, Backordering, and Investor’s Edge.
